MSE Seminar: “Working Safely in the Lab: Navigating Common Laboratory Hazards in MSE Research”

EHRS staff will discuss how to work safely in the lab while navigating the changing landscape of materials science and engineering research.
The talk will also cover;
– Standard orientation topics (physical/bio/chem safety, waste disposal, Workday training, etc.)
– The new methylene chloride regulations and how they will affect EHRS and Penn operations.
– Safe use of tube furnaces, especially in combination with flammable gases.
– Hazards associated with old chemical inventory.
– EHRS’s new incident reporting form.
– Sustainability initiatives at Penn

EHRS Staff
The Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety is a unit in the Office of Vice Provost for Research. In consultation with faculty and the administration, EHRS is responsible for the development, implementation and management of the University’s biological, chemical, occupational and radiation safety programs as well as the radiation safety programs throughout the University Health System, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Wistar Institute and Monell Chemical Senses Center. EHRS plays an important role in a variety of activities throughout the University and affiliated institutions.
