Cultivating Cultures of Ethical STEM: Institutional Transformation and Industrial Research Approaches and Findings

This two-part talk will describe the scope of work and emergent findings of two ongoing National Science Foundation Cultivating Cultures of Ethical STEM (CCESTEM) projects. Each project seeks to provide strategies for the design, assessment, and research of learners’ ethical formation. The first project, an Institutional Transformation CCESTEM project (Award #1737157), seeks to utilize Faculty Learning Communities to refine instructional approaches to the Integrated Community-Engaged Learning and Ethical Reflection (I-CELER) framework among faculty in two departments at Indiana University Purdue University – Indianapolis (IUPUI). The second project, a Standard Research CCESTEM project (Award #1737303), seeks to explore variations in ways of experience ethics among engineering practitioners in the health products industry. Taken together, these projects provide insights for the design of learning environments to foster STEM students’ and practitioners’ ethical dispositions and reasoning skills.
Justin L. Hess
Assistant Professor, School of Engineering Education, Purdue University
Dr. Justin L. Hess is an assistant professor in the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University. Previously, Justin served as assistant director of the STEM Education Innovation and Research Institute at IUPUI. Dr. Hess’s research interests include exploring empathy’s functional role within engineering and evaluating students’ learning in the spaces of design, ethics, sustainability, and innovation. He received his PhD from Purdue University’s School of Engineering Education, along with a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. As a doctoral student, Dr. Hess was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. He is currently the program chair of the Liberal Education/Engineering & Society Division (LEES) with the American Society for Engineering Education, as well as chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Committee on Sustainability subcommittee on Formal Engineering Education. Dr. Hess is a co-investigator on two NSF Awards from the Cultivating Cultures of Ethical STEM mechanism, including Award #1737157, “Institutional Transformation: Enhancing IUPUI STEM Curriculum through the Community-Engaged Learning and Ethical Reflection Framework (I-CELER),” and Award #1737303, “CCE STEM Standard: Understanding and Evaluating Ethical Engineering Practice.”
