ODEI Spotlight: Conversations with GABE about our Classrooms and Diversity

May 7, 2021 at 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

This event will have two sessions. You are encouraged to attend both. Each session is 45 minutes long. The first session is for students only, and it provides a platform for students to discuss openly about factors that make graduate school difficult. The second session is a moderated Q&A. This session aims to acquaint students with BE faculty members passionate about advancing the department’s diversity and inclusion efforts. Panelists will give a quick introduction to who they are and why diversity and inclusion is important to them. We would also discuss initiatives that the BE program and school of engineering have implemented addressing diversity and inclusion (removal of GRE requirement, formation of a DEI/DE committee, etc.). Finally, some potential topic of conversations:

  • How has engaging diverse students in the virtual environment been similar or different for you as faculty? How can engagement be encouraged?
  • What are the core issues of diversity and inclusion (from the perspective of faculty members), and what steps can be taken to address them?
  • International students are an important part of the Penn Engineering Community. How is the bioengineering department assisting their inclusion?
